FAQ for Laser nasal surgery (sinus surgery)

What will my nose look and feel like straight after the surgery?

Your nose will be packed with tampons to collect the blood and you will have tubes (stents) placed in your nose to help shape and keep your airways open. You will not be able to breathe through your nose until the tampons are removed the following morning. You may have some bleeding and it might be more comfortable to tape guaze across your nose to help to catch it. Depending on your surgery you may have some stitches visible. These will be assessed and possibly removed at the follow up visit after one week depending on the healing. You will feel some discomfort in your nose however you will be given pain medicine to make you feel more comfortable.

Is it okay to take a shower and brush my teeth?

You can shower and brush your teeth but you should try not to let water go into your nose and you may experience some bleeding the first time your brush your teeth. This is because of the stent in the nose.

How will my nose change over the next week?

After you have the tampons removed by the nurse the following morning you will be able to breathe through your nose. The swelling in your nose will gradually decrease. In order to keep your airway clear you will need to wash (douche) with sterile water every 3 hours. You can’t blow your nose until the tubes are removed as it may cause them to clog, therefore you will need to sniff gently instead. You will be given pain killers and antihistamine to help keep your airways clear. The changes and speed of recovery will vary depending on the surgery you have had done.

Is it okay to lie down?

It is better to keep yourself upright or lie slightly inclined (sleep with 2 pillows) to help keep your passages clear for the first week after your surgery. Once you are discharged from hospital it is easier to sleep with two pillows. At night taping gauze across your nose to help catch any leaking blood can help to make you more comfortable.

Will I bleed a lot?

Laser surgeries usually does not cause much bleeding, however one should be prepared to have some mild bleeding for the first 1 to 2 days.
It can be controlled with mild compression or ice pack.

When will the tubes (stent) be removed?

As long as healing is progressing as it should be, when you visit the doctor for your follow up visit (one week after your surgery) you will have the tubes removed. Taking the tubes out earlier than this is not usually recommended as it would affect the results seen. After suction to remove the excess mucus and any clots at the back of your nose you will instantly feel the benefit of your surgery. At this time you can start to gently blow your nose to help to clear it. Any packing that remains in your nose will break down over time and come out of your nose naturally. You will be given medicine to help to heal your nose further and scab over any remaining ‘wet’ areas. You will have bloody mucus come out of your nose for the next week. This will gradually change from red to brown as your nose continues to heal. Continuing to douche your nose is still necessary but this can be reduced to 2 to 3 times daily. You may still find that you see clots coming out; this is normal and part of the healing process.

When can I exercise again?

During this time it is not recommended that you do any heavy lifting or exercise as it puts pressure on your nose and nasal passages. Patients may begin light walking at 4-7 days, but wait about 18-21 days before vigorous exercise. Heavy weight lifting should wait until 21 days onwards as it increases your blood pressure. That can cause a nose bleed. Also if a weight falls on your nose in the first 3 weeks, the likelihood of breaking it is great. It takes about 3 weeks for nasal bones to heal enough to withstand some mild trauma. At the two week follow up visit your doctor will be able to assess when you can start to exercise again, however getting back into exercise gradually is recommended for the next month.

Can I fly?

Patients may fly about 10 days following rhinoplasty. The concern for flying is humidifying, make sure to humidify your nose frequently during your flight.

Can my medical illness like diabetes and hypertension prevent me from doing laser nasal surgery?

These medical illnesses are not a contradiction to laser nasal surgeries. They are usually reviewed and controlled prior to surgery
